Greetings, I’m Dr. Welker, an associate professor in fashion merchandising at Stevenson University. I am just starting my second year at Stevenson. Last year, Dr. Toler and I produced the fashion merchandising program’s first fashion show at Boscov’s. Here are links to photos and videos from last year:

In October, I always enjoy showing my students the website for the National Retail Federation (nrf.com). Our classes stress understanding consumer behavior and societal trends. The Halloween report by the National Retail Federation gives retail executives market relevant market research.
According to the NRF report, Halloween is one of the fastest growing holidays. As a shopper, you might have noticed changes. Does your favorite discounter sell pet costumes, more adult costumes than usual, or adult tees with a Halloween theme? When parents escort their children up and down the block, they want to join in the holiday spirit. Plus, Halloween falls on a Friday, which is sure to spark an increase in celebrations. NRF is predicting almost $80 will be spent per person on the holiday. This includes home décor, candy, and costumes.
These are a few of the facts that I will introduce to the students this week. Questions that I have in mind:
- What are the Halloween traditions in your family?
- Would Halloween falling on a weekend influence how you stock adult costumes in your store?
- What is the impact of the whole family trick or treating, including the family pet?
