On September 30, a group of my students in Fashion Merchandising created and presented the latest fall fashion trends at Boscov’s in White Marsh. These students are part of Stevenson University’s Visual Merchandising class and were asked to create full displays that showcased the season’s trendiest apparel and accessories. Students worked in groups of three and used their knowledge to become experts in the current trends. They were able to share their knowledge with many customers that came through the display. I received many great comments from the staff of Boscov’s, parents who attended the event, and a number of shoppers who were interested in what’s hot this season. My students worked very hard to produce a great event, one that I hope they will be proud of, as they become professionals in the world of fashion.
Visual merchandising is an important part of the fashion field. Visual merchandising is so much more than just dressing mannequins. Those working in the field use their creative talents and skills to support the overall objectives of the retail business. Some of the skills that are developed and utilized in this field include trend research, appropriate use of the elements and principles of design, planning, and of course, creativity. Students who are interested in visual merchandising might find themselves producing fashion shows, styling professionals and celebrities, or even a visual merchandising store manager. It’s a great part of our industry and the SU Visual Merchandising students are well on their way to becoming seasoned professionals.
